A little round up of things I’ve been enjoying this month in beauty, style, and life in general.
My Year of Rest & Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh
I am a notoriously slow reader, have an embarrassingly short attention span, and have a generally hard time finding books I enjoy, let alone can’t put down. This is one of those books I literally couldn’t stop reading and I tore through it in under 48 hours, which is unheard of for me apart from when I read Twilight in grade 6. It’s about an unnamed twenty-something woman living in New York who is trying to medicate herself into sleeping for an entire year, basically in an attempt to transform her outlook on life. It sounds morbid, but it’s hilarious in a dark sort of way. It’s the perfect book to take with you on a weekend getaway.
Supergoop Play Everyday Sunscreen
Sun protection has become more important to me than ever this summer. I love being in the sun and having a deep tan, but I also don’t want to age my skin or increase my chances of skin cancer down the road. I’ve been using the Supergoop Play Everyday sunscreen more than any other in my collection this month, and it’s a keeper. I originally picked it up as a complementary product to my Supergoop Zinc Screen; sometimes I’m not after a tint or only want to pack a single product for face and body. The Play Everyday sunscreen is also quite a bit less expensive, it’s water and sweat resistant, and has a higher SPF rating. It smells lightly like orange creamsicle, goes on smooth and leaves a glowy finish. I think it’s also overtaken the Zinc Screen as my new favourite sunscreen, which is a big deal.
Bohème Goods Sunhat
I’ve written about this hat on here before, but it’s really one of my favourite discoveries of the month. I have such a difficult time finding hats that fit my head, so when I saw this one came in a L/XL, I had to snap it up. It’s a classic cotton canvas sunhat, made by hand in Vancouver, with the coolest oversized brim. It literally has the initials of the hat-maker and the collection handwritten on the inside, and is such a one-of-a-kind piece. Hats are another way I’m trying to protect myself from the sun this year, and I’m glad to have finally found one in my size (and a gorgeous one no less).
& Other Stories Linen Shirt
I had been after an oversized linen button up to add to my summer wardrobe for a while, but was having the hardest time finding something perfect. Everything I could find was either too fitted, too sheer, or too stark white in colour. I ended up ordering this one from & Other Stories and it ticked all my boxes: perfectly oversized, nice heavier-weight linen, and a gorgeous creamy colour. I’ve worn it probably 4 times a week since I got it at the beginning of the month, and don’t foresee that slowing down.
Wolf Circus Penny Checkered Necklace
Technically I got this one at the very end of May since it was my birthday gift from Jonah, but I’ve been wearing it every single day this month. I’ve been a longtime fan of Wolf Circus for their unique styles and their ethos in general, plus I love that they’re a Canadian brand. Their new checkered collection is one of my favourites, and it’s the perfect way to dip a toe into the checkered trend without going overboard. The squares are all hand-painted in resin and made with recycled materials. A special piece I will treasure forever.
Glossier Balm Dotcom in Coconut
The self-proclaimed lip balm aficionado that I am, I always love adding new ones to my collection. While I’ve used Balm Dotcoms in the past and find them super moisturizing, I only had the tinted ones which didn’t always fit the bill. Who wants to put on a cherry-tinted balm before bed? I’d hesitated on the coconut scent in the past since I’m usually not a coconut girl, but the scent is so pleasant and summery. Since it isn’t tinted, I can wear it all day and night as well. You really can’t go wrong with Balm Dotcom in general, and I love how many different scents there are. I already have cherry, mango, birthday cake, and berry, and I can vouch for all of them.
