It’s that time of year again where I become both sick of the winter weather and simply unwilling to sacrifice warmth for looking put together. Typically that means I spend the last few weeks of winter wearing nothing but jeans (often with leggings under), heavy sweaters, and when I do venture outside, a down-filled parka. This year, I’ve tried to be more conscious about layering and more creative in my approach to staying warm.
Last weekend when we shot these photos, it was a frigid -15 degrees Celsius, the kind of cold that makes your fingers go numb after 5 minutes, but I was dying to find a way to wear the new denim jacket I scored in the sales. I realized that the indigo colour was the perfect compliment to the plaid coat I’ve waxed poetic about before, and with that I had the start of my outfit.
A little bit more on the denim jacket. I had been on the hunt since this time last year for the perfect indigo denim chore jacket. I also knew I wanted something a little bit structured, made from that super sturdy denim, and not too long. Clearly I’ve become horribly picky (or particular?) as I’ve gotten older. I had nearly given up the search when I stumbled upon this SLVRLAKE beauty in the Holts sale, and it truly checked all my boxes. When it arrived in the mail I audibly gasped — everything about it is perfect from the colour to the copper buttons to the rigidity of it. I’m so excited to wear it more once the weather warms up, but for now I’ll have to get a bit creative.
The Vagabond Chelsea boots are far and away the hardest working item in my wardrobe. I got them last autumn when the Bottega lug sole boots were all the rage, but the style of these ones just feels so timeless to me (not to mention the rubber lug sole being incredibly practical for Toronto winters). The perfect chunky boot without being too over the top, if I do say so myself. I own a few pairs of Vagabond boots now, some from way back in 2016, and they’ve held up really well so I wholeheartedly recommend the brand!
The coat is obviously the Aritzia Slouch coat that every Toronto girl and their mother seems to own, but I love that the plaid colourway makes it feel a bit unique. It’s also super warm and has a nice high wool content, especially for the price point. 50% wool just doesn’t cut it for me, but at 75% wool this one felt like it was solidly worth the investment.
Add a long sleeve base layer, a wool sweater, and my trusty black Levi’s, and that was the final look. These jeans have well and truly been worn to death, and although they’ve become so soft and comfy with age, they’re starting to look a bit threadbare. I recently bought a replacement pair, also from Levi’s, and once I get those back from the tailor I’m planning on doing another post on some recent wardrobe additions and everything I’m excited to wear for spring (denim jacket included, obviously).
