As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become all the more cognizant of the pieces that work best for me: neutral colours, classic shapes, and natural fibres. While I always have more wardrobe editing that could be done, keeping my closet tight these past few years has been almost liberating, and I’ve really leaned into the “fewer better” approach.
I’ve become a firm believer in curating a wardrobe that actually makes it fun and exciting to get dressed in the mornings. For me, the best way that I’ve found to keep my wardrobe feeling edited, cohesive, and easy to work with has been to create a seasonal wishlist based on gaps in my wardrobe and that season’s trends. This way, I can ensure that the pieces I buy will work with what I already have, and that I don’t make any impulse buys that end up sitting in my closet unworn.
Although spring still feels like a ways away (as I type this there is a blizzard going on outside my window), I’ve begun picking up some pieces from the ever-helpful wishlist with a definite focus on the classics I love so much. So without further ado, here are some recent additions I’ve made to my wardrobe as well as an edit of items I’m still on the hunt for.
Arket Oversized Cotton Striped Knit
Shockingly, a striped sweater has been on my wishlist for a few seasons now, but I just hadn’t come across the right one until now. I love that this one is cotton which makes it a little more seasonless; it’ll be just as perfect in the winter as it will be on a chilly summer evening. It’s also just super versatile in terms of the ways it can be worn — with jeans, linen trousers, even draped effortlessly over the shoulders. The shape of it reminds me of the Totême turtlenecks that are all the rage, but I love the seasonlessness of this crewneck version. I’m wearing a medium here and it’s the perfect oversized fit.
Slvrlake Thompson Denim Jacket
I waxed poetic about this piece in my last blog post but it’s honestly the most excited I’ve been about a piece in a long time. I’ve been on the hunt for an indigo-hued, stiff cotton, cropped denim chore jacket since this time last year, but just couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for. Then I stumbled upon this one in the Holt Renfrew sale and it ticks all my boxes. Again, super versatile and is equally great layered with a sweater as it will be in the summer with linen trousers on a chilly evening.
Levi’s Ribcage Straight Ankle Jeans
Now, these were less of a wishlist item and more an item of necessity, but they’re worthy of a mention here nonetheless. I’m a huge fan of the Ribcage cut, and when my other black jeans started to go a bit threadbare, I decided to pick these ones up. I love the slightly washed black colour, and the top block of the Ribcage can’t be beat for me with their truly waist-pinching rise. I got these ones hemmed at a local denim tailor which is such a hack for me as someone who loves an ankle cropped jean but is too short for the average off-the-shelf “cropped” denim. Just an inch of the bottom makes all the difference for me, and means that these jeans are easier to wear with all sorts of footwear, from chunky chelsea boots to sneakers to a strappy heeled sandal.
Jenny Bird Toni Clip On Earrings
Earrings for me have long been a pipe dream. I love them in theory but I’ve never found a piercing that didn’t result in an allergic reaction, and clip ons are often so matronly and not impressive in terms of quality. I stumbled across these while browsing the Jenny Bird website, and they might just be the nicest clip ons I’ve ever come across. They give off a retro Italian summer vibe to me, and I think they’ll be so perfect on my trip to Portugal later this spring. I audibly gasped when I put them on because of how much they brighten up the face, and I truly can’t wait to have an occasion to wear them.
A. Emery Liam Sandals
Last summer, my black slide-on Birkenstocks officially bit the dust after 8 years of wear. While they’re still handy for bringing out the garbage and running across the street to the market, I decided I needed to upgrade my black sandal game for summer. I came across the brand A. Emery after seeing their collab with Matteau on Net-a-Porter. They specialize in creating the perfect black sandal, and it’s clear they take their craft seriously. After some internet sleuthing, I found these Liam sandals at a local stockist on sale and snatched them up immediately. Not to sound like a broken record here, but the versatility of these is what got me — minimal, classic, and will work with everything from jeans to a midi dress.
