As I’ve worked on making my closet more minimal (read: more hardworking) this year, I’ve come to appreciate more and more those special pieces that really ~spark joy~. The pieces that, if I’m not reaching for every week, put a smile on my face when the special occasion does strike.
The first such piece is this buttery red Furla bag I purchased whilst on exchange in Milan back in 2016. I had debated which special souvenir I was going to treat myself to during the trip, and in the end this one came out on top for its gorgeous pebbled leather and timeless shape, not to mention the swoon-worthy colour. While I don’t crack it out of the dustbag on a weekly basis (ahem, raspberry red), whenever I do wear it, it always makes my heart flutter and reminds me of the most special four months spent in Italy. And it can’t hurt that it brightens up an otherwise basic look.
The other piece that comes to mind when thinking of smile-worthy pieces is this white corduroy fluffy collar coat à la Ganni. Without fail, it makes me feel on top of the world. This was a special item I treated myself to a couple years ago, whilst hunting for a statement coat to take with me on a trip to London, and to this day it takes me back to roaming those hallowed streets. From the plush collar, to the white-after-Labour-Day rule breaking, to the perfect oversized shape, it’s a statement piece I reach for when I need a confidence boost or a little extra pizzaz for an outfit.
Especially with how stressful and heavy this year has been, even more than usual I’m all about those pieces that give me a little extra confidence, take me back to a special trip, or otherwise put a little pep in my step.
