The boredom this month has been real, with month 3 (I think it’s been 3 months, I lost count a while ago) of lockdown 2.0 creeping by and the cabin fever reaching new heights. I’ve spent more time just trying to find ways to entertain myself than probably ever before, and this post is the result of trying to keep myself at least somewhat busy. Here’s a small list of things that I discovered this past month that have brought me joy, peace, entertainment, or reflection.
READING
COVID-19 Stole My Identity, by Charlotte Moore. When I first discovered this article, I immediately had to re-read it a couple of time. I think it puts into words exactly how I’ve been feeling lately, but couldn’t quite put a finger on. The pandemic has redefined or called into question so many things I once took for granted, that it almost feels like the “before times” were an alternate reality (and in some ways I think that’s true). Even the version of myself that I was before feels so distant and untouchable, and I think this article explains that strange feeling so well.
Habitat: The Field Guide to Decorating, by Lauren Liess. I’ve been trying to reduce my screen time lately, and I’ve been spending more time finding inspiration offline. With the freezing cold weather this month, I’ve had the time to dive into this book, which is basically a 101 guide to interior design. The photographs are lush and textured, and the words are so educational. Truly escapism in its most beautiful form.
The Vanishing Half, by Brit Bennett. I know I’m late to the party on this one, and in all honesty I technically first discovered it in January, but I’ve been so enjoying this recently. I usually pick it up before bed every couple of nights, devour a chapter or so, and put it down for a few days, which is about as “dedicated” to a book as I get. I also especially love novels told over multiple timelines and generations, so if you enjoy that as well and want to expand your understanding on Black families and experiences (as I think we all should), I really recommend this.
WATCHING
I never watched the Harry Potter movies as a kid, so Jonah and I dedicated ourselves to watching all eight of them this month to keep ourselves entertained. I had an inkling that I would enjoy them, being the fan of all things British that I am, and the films did not disappoint. If I had to choose a favourite it would probably be The Order of the Phoenix, but the rugged landscapes are really what did it for me. I’ve been feeling so nostalgic for Scotland lately, and the films got me excited to go back some day.
Being the lover of RuPaul’s Drag Race that I am, I’ve been watching both the US and UK contests simultaneously this month. The UK version has been absolutely everything for me though, much more entertaining than the US version in my humble opinion. I’ve never laughed out loud watching this show like I have this season at Lawrence Chaney’s jokes. If you’re in Canada, you can watch RPDR UK on Crave.
Framing Britney Spears finally came out in Canada this past week, and what a watch it was. Although I was young at the time her career took off and during her struggles in the early aughts, I still clearly remember seeing her all over the tabloid covers at the grocery checkout. The doc gave me a whole new understanding of and perspective on how we treat young female celebrities, and I also really enjoyed the format of a short explainer film on a topical subject.
Allen v. Farrow is another doc that came out this past week, but in this case I’ve only seen the first of the four episodes. It of course tells the story of Dylan Farrow and Woody Allen; the first episode was really just background so I’m intrigued to watch the remaining episodes as I only have a very vague understanding of Dylan’s story. It’s certainly a disturbing topic though so be conscious of that before choosing to put it on.
HOME
H&M Home Washed Linen Bathrobe. I had been after a bathrobe for a little while now and finally decided on this one from H&M, in the powder beige colour (which is really more of a taupey-pink). Let me tell you how fancy I feel trotting around the apartment in this thing, truly living my chic lady fantasy. It’s also 100% linen so I’ll be able to wear it year-round, which is why I didn’t go for a heavier terrycloth version. Perfect attire for a self-care day.
Earl Grey Blueberry Lemon Cake. Every once in a while, I have a craving for loaf cake. Perhaps it’s the old soul in me, but I love having a slice with some tea in the afternoons, and this recipe seemed like the perfect thing to make with the dreary weather we’ve been getting in Toronto. It turned out so delicious, and while it’s a little more involved than a basic vanilla cake, it was still super easy. Would definitely recommend if you’re also a fan of a good old loaf cake like I am.
