If you’ve seen my Instagram lately, it’s no secret that I love essential oils; I love framing my day with a good puff of delicately-scented vapour. Over the last little while, spending much more time at home, I’ve gotten a better idea for which types of scents I’m drawn to, and which blends work best at certain times of day.
The Vitruvi team was kind enough to send me one of their stone diffusers, along with a handful of their essential oils. They’ve long been my go-to for essential oils and blends, but I’ve been lusting over their diffusers as well. They’re so organic in their design and really are a piece of decor in and of themselves. I’m so happy to add this one to the collection and have a diffuser for the bedroom!
As I’ve gotten more comfortable with essential oils, I’ve started to find some other uses for them beyond the diffuser. Vitruvi founder Sara Panton’s book has been such a source of inspiration as I learn how to expand my use of essential oils, but here are a few ways I’ve been using and loving them in everyday life.
Diffusing
Starting up the diffuser is a morning ritual for me, akin to making a cup of coffee. I love to start my day with a good, fresh blend. Right now I’ve been loving a mix of grapefruit, lavender, eucalyptus, and spruce — about 5 drops each. This mix really gets my day started on the right foot and makes me feel productive.
In the afternoon, when I start to slow down and need to switch things up, I love to use the Clean Sweep blend. It’s fresh, invigorating, and really helps me to refocus. For rainy days Pacific is my go-to, as it brings the outside in and reminds me of damp spring days spent in nature.
In the evenings I’m a big fan of something cozy. The Dusk blend from Vitruvi is a long time favourite, especially with a few drops of cedar wood added in. Lavender is another one of my go-to’s for something super relaxing and grounding, especially right before bed.
Scented dryer balls
This is one of my favourite hacks. I put a couple of drops of essential oils onto some woollen dryer balls to add a fresh scent to my laundry. I’ve never used dryer sheets, since they aren’t great for the environment, but the wool dryer balls plus some essential oil have the same effect minus the environmental impact. I’ll put some drops of lavender when I dry my bed linens to give them that classic bedtime scent, and I love using bergamot when I dry my towels to give them a fresh, citrusy zing.
Shower steamer
There’s nothing quite like a nice steamy shower, but add in some essential oils and you’ve got yourself an at-home spa experience. Eucalyptus oil is one of my favourites; it’s woodsy and earthy and somehow always makes me feel relaxed yet energized. Plus it has antimicrobial, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory properties that help stimulate deep breathing. I love to put a few drops of eucalyptus on the shower floor or rubbed between my palms before getting in. The heat from the water vaporizes the oil and gives off the same feeling as a spa steam room. Truly the best way to start the day.
