Is there anything more quintessentially summertime than a white cotton dress? I can think of a few close runner ups, like an Aperol Spritz in the shade on a hot day or the sticky skin that comes with hours spent in the sun, but for me nothing screams summer quite as loudly as the crisp simplicity of white cotton.
I’ve waxed poetic about this dress in the past, about the importance of mindful shopping and the careful planning of new season wardrobe pieces. But it really has become a staple for me this summer, from the cooler nights straight through to the warmest of days.
I’m a massive proponent of natural fibres all year round but especially so in the summer. Growing up with eczema will do that to you; at this point just the sight of polyester makes my skin flare up in an itchy rash. While the cut makes me feel like I should be frolicking in a field of tall grasses (in the very best way), the fabric is really what makes this dress such a winner for me. It’s breezy, light, crisp, catches the breeze, and is truly what summer dress dreams are made out of. Plus the fact that the natural fibre will biodegrade one day and return to the earth rather than languishing in a landfill is just the cherry on top.
There’s something special about this dress for me, and I always feel like my best summertime self when I wear it. A little field frolic sometimes feels like exactly what I need.
